Two trees

“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2:9

In the Garden was ‘every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food’. And there were also two specific trees: the tree of knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life. And these trees are still here spiritually. Man was not allowed to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). But man had a choice, and he choose to eat from that tree.

Thousands years later we still have the same choice. Do we eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Or do we eat from the tree of life? You can say that the tree of knowledge of good and evil has two different fruits: good and evil. That we are not allowed to eat ‘evil’ seems logical. But what could be the reason that we are not allowed to eat from ‘good’? What is wrong with good?

The Bible repeatedly calls us to renew our mind. We do this specifically by replacing lies and delusions with the truth. What lies and delusions are meant? And what truth? Is it about the truth that I am a woman with brown hair? That is a fact and not a lie. And it is not ‘evil’ as well. Must we search for truth about earthly matters? Or must we search for truth about heavenly, spiritual matters? Do we look at the things of the earth? Or do we look at the things of the heaven?

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen areeternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18

The tree of knowledge of good and evil is on the (spiritual) earth. The tree of life is in the (spiritual) heaven. YHWH does not want us to eat the earthly fruit ‘good’, from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but He wants us to eat the heavenly fruit ‘life’, from the tree of life. What is ‘wrong’ with ‘good’ is that it is not ‘life’. It is eating from the wrong tree!

What is the difference? Maybe a specific example makes it clearer. On my Facebook timeline I sometimes see discussions about the form of the earth. In these discussions Bible texts are used and it seems therefore that we are discussing a higher spiritual (heavenly) truth. Let’s assume in this example that the earth is flat. On the level of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the opinion that the earth is flat is ‘good’ and the opinion that the earth is round is ‘evil’. But both opinions will not give us life. Because we are eating from the wrong tree!

When the Bible calls us to renew our mind with His truth, His deeper and higher spiritual truth is meant. The truth of His Kingdom. And we find this truth in the deeper, spiritual meaning of the Word. So it is not about truth of all kinds of earthly matters, not even when it is about His physical creation. The tree of life symbolizes a higher truth, His deeper spiritual truth. When we ‘eat’ mostly truth about all kind of earthly things – even when we find these things in the literal text of His Word or in His physical creation – we eat ‘good’ from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But this truth will never give us His life. Because we do not eat from the tree of life. And only fruit from this tree gives life. It is essential to discern! And it is related to many subjects that pass through our minds. Ask yourself this question: is it ‘good’? Or does it give life? Do I eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil? Or do I eat from the tree of life?

In the Bible, trees symbolize man. Psalm 1 compares a man who does not walk in the counsel of ungodly but who delights in His law, with a tree. In Zechariah 4 two anointed ones are compared with a tree. And when Yeshua gives sight to a blind man in Mark 8, the man sees men as trees, walking (do trees walk?). When we connect this with the two trees in the Garden, it are two different man: man from who we can eat (accept) good or evil, and man from who we can eat (accept) life. Let’s eat from man we know His life, His truth, is in them, so we eat from the tree of life. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:4-7:

“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory”

Let’s reach for more than good, let’s reach for life! And let’s fill our hearts and minds more and more with His higher and deeper spiritual truth, so we man can eat life from us.

Yeshua is the Life. He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), and He gives us Living water (John 4:10). He is the way, the truth and the Life (John 14:6). So do not renew your mind with the ‘good’ of the world, but let your mind be renewed with His truth and teaching (Ephesians 4:21, 23). And His teaching is spirit and gives life (John 6:63).

“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:19
