“Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.” Luke 11:39-41
In Luke 11:39, Yeshua says that while the Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, their inward part is full of sin. Lies and delusions in our mind (“thoughts of our heart”, Genesis 6:5) is in essence what is sin. This sin is in the “cup and dish.” Cup and dish therefore refer to our mind and heart. Yeshua calls them foolish, because they must not think that He who made the outside (their physical body) did not make their inside (mind and heart) also (verse 40). He knows our heart and our thoughts (Psalm 139:2, 23). He formed our inward parts (reins) and covered us in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). Reins also refer to our mind (Psalm 7:9, Psalm 16:7, Psalm 26:2, Jeremiah 17:10). Then in Luke 11:41, Yeshua calls on the Pharisees to give the content of their hearts and minds (inside) as alms. That refers to “sacrificing” the lies and delusions in our minds and hearts *. If we do that, then our “inside” will become clean as well.
“You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties”
Psalm 139:2, 13, 23
