In Joshua 24:15, Joshua declares to the people that he will serve YHWH. And also that his house will serve YHWH. Literally he means his family. But house in the Bible also refers to our mind. I explain this further in my book (1). And that fits well in this context.
So, Joshua declares that he will serve YHWH with his mind. How do we serve YHWH with our mind? This becomes clear in the context of this text:
“Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:14, 15
In this text, serving Him in sincerity and in truth is opposed to serving idols (the gods of the fathers). In my book I explain what an idol really is. We also find it in this context:
“Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.” Joshua 24:23
If we focus on idolatry, we will leave Him. Because through idolatry we focus on something other than YHWH. Spiritual idolatry is believing lies and delusions in our mind instead of His truth. Whether it is a physical image or an image, a lie, in our head: the effect is the same. And the images in our head are harder to distinguish because they are not tangible, not physically visible. If we do not worship Him in our mind and heart, if we do not fill our mind and heart with His truth, then we worship lies and delusions. And those are our spiritual idols.
If we want to serve Him with our house (mind), then we must replace the idols (lies and delusions) in our mind with His truth. We have the same choice as the people to whom Joshua directed his words. So, choose who you want to serve with your house (mind): His truth, or something else. And if it is not His truth, then it is lies and delusions. Can you declare, just like Joshua:
“But as for me and my house, we will serve YHWH!” Joshua 24:15
