My mouth shall not transgress

“Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.” Psalm 17:3

When I read this text, another text came to my mind about something coming out of the mouth:

“Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.” Matthew 15:11

These two texts are connected.

In his Psalm the Psalmist makes the connection between heart and mouth. He writes that YHWH found nothing in his heart. Of course it means: no evil. And because there was no evil in his heart, this did not come out of his mouth either. Here it becomes clear that what comes out of our mouth comes from our heart. Heart and mind are connected in the Bible and are often mentioned together, for example in Genesis 6:5: ‘the thoughts of his heart’. Our words are formed from what is in our heart and mind. If His truth is in our mind and heart, His words of truth come from our mouth. If there are lies and delusions from man in our mind and heart, then those lies and delusions come from our mouth.

Yeshua confirms this principle in Matthew 15:11. He explains that physical food that we put in our mouth will not defile us. Because it goes in the belly and is then cast out (verse 17). But what comes out of our mouth, from our heart, that is what defiles us. What comes out of our mouth shows what is in our heart and mind.

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.” Matthew 15:18-20

Evil thoughts are ‘thoughts the heart of man’ and, according to Genesis 6:5, these are ‘only evil continually’. From the heart of man come forth the things that Yeshua mentions as examples. Here He also confirms that the core of sin is within us. Because an ‘evil thought’ is already a sin, so ‘evil’ actions are not required. Adulteries and fornications are mentioned in the same list. We can commit adultery with our words, but it all starts in the adulterous ‘thoughts of our heart’. Earlier I wrote that adultery and fornication refer to our relationship with Him. Are we faithful to Him in our mind and heart? Or are we flirting with thoughts from man of the earth? We can also murder with our words. Yeshua says this in Matthew 5:21-22 as well. False witnesses and blasphemies about Him are words that come out of our mouth and do not glorify Him, but distort His image. Words of lies and delusions about Him and His Word (which are one). And in that way we distort His image, not only for ourselves but also for others who hear (and read) our words. These words also come from lies and delusions about Him and His Word, lies and delusions that are in our mind and heart.

So, to have sinned it is not necessary that we physically murder or commit adultery or fornication. Lies and delusions in our heart and mind already make us sin. It is therefore essential to protect our heart by filling it with His words of truth:

“My son, attend to my words;
incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Let them not depart from thine eyes;
keep them in the midst of thine heart.
For they are life unto those that find them,
and health to all their flesh.
Keep thy heart with all diligence;
for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:20-23
