The fruit of the Spirit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” Galatians 5:22

How can people see that we know Him, that we live with Him? By the fruit of the Spirit that grows in us. Galatians 5:22 mentions this fruit. Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. When I read this text, I noticed that no actions are mentioned here. The fruit of the Spirit focuses on the characteristics of our heart …

How do these characteristics come in our heart? By the renewal of our mind (Ephesians 4:23). Because our mind and our heart are connected. And that is also where our sin is, according to Genesis 6:5. If it is true that we sin because of the ‘thoughts of the heart’ of man, then there is also where the solution is. When we renew our mind and heart with His truth (Eph. 4:21), the fruit of His Spirit is visible through us.

Of course we also show the fruit of the Spirit through our actions. Because loving deeds come from love in our heart. And a gentle or ‘longsuffering’ connection with people also comes from this fruit in our heart. This is also evident in Ephesians 4. From lasciviousness, uncleanness, deceitful lusts, lying, stealing, corrupt communication, bitterness, anger, wrath, clamour, evil speaking and malice (verses 19, 22, 25, 28, 29, 31) by the renewing the spirit of our mind (verse 23) by His truth (verse 21), to righteousness, holiness, speaking truth, giving with those that needeth, communication good to the use of edifying, kindness, tenderhearted and forgiving (verses 24, 25, 28, 29) , 32). From the old man (verse 22), to the new man (verse 24). Do you recognize anything of yourself in the old man that Paul describes here? Then there is work to be done! Let His fruit grow in your heart by filling your heart with His truth.
