Subverting houses

“For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision. Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.”
Titus 1:10-11

In verse 10, Paul writes about unruly and vain talkers, people whose mouths must be stopped, and deceivers. He mentions this in contrast to people who hold fast the faithful word as them was taught, the sound doctrine (verse 9). The faithful word and sound doctrine is the truth of His Word (verses 1-3). The deceivers and people who talk vain are therefore people who do not teach sound doctrine, people who teach lies and delusions. And there are “many” (verse 10).

What is the effect of these people? They subvert ‘houses’ (verse 11). And in the Bible, ‘house’ refers to our mind (1). Thus, the deeper spiritual ‘translation’ of this text is that people who teach lies and delusions can subvert our mind. And there are many of them. A warning that is still applicable today. Perhaps more than ever.
