“And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.”
2 Chronicles 12:14
He did evil. Evil was the cause of the flood:
“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5
In this text, it is not about ‘doing’ evil, but about the evil ‘thoughts’ of the heart. You may think that is the Old Testament. Don’t we live in the ‘new’ now? Then read Matthew 24:37-39.
Our actions and our heart and mind (thoughts) are closely connected. Yeshua alludes to this in Matthew 5:28. But this was already clear in the Old Testament, for example in the Bible text I started with. If our heart is not (fully) focused on Him, then we do evil in His eyes. Then we sin. The one is not separate from the other.
If you want to exterminate weeds, you do that with root and all. Otherwise it will grow back just as fast – or even faster. The root of evil actions is the lies and delusions in our mind and heart. The weeds of evil actions grow on that root. We can try to remove our evil actions, and sometimes that even seems to work well temporarily. But as long as the root is still there, new evil actions will grow on the root. If you want to eradicate your evil actions forever, make sure that your heart is more and more focused on Him.
When is our heart focused on YHWH? That is when our heart is focused on His truth. And that is only possible if His truth is in our heart and mind. Where there are lies and delusions of man in our heart, our heart is not focused on Him. John says in 1 John 1:8 that we deceive ourselves when we say we have no sin. To what extent do you cope with your ‘evil actions’? Do you want to completely exterminate your weeds? Then search in your heart what it is that is not focused on Him. What lies and delusions are in your heart? What truth of Him is still missing in your heart?
