“Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.” Job 22:22-23
What does this text actually say? Returning to YHWH is returning to the truth of His words. In this Bible text from Job this is connected as well. Elifaz, one of Job’s friends, encourages Job to fill his heart with the words of truth from YHWH. And this applies to us as well. He then says that if we return to YHWH, we will be ‘built up’. This ‘building up’ is connected to ‘tabernacles’ in the same verse. A tabernacle – just like other places in the Bible – refers to our mind (1).
So, re-turn means turning to the truth of His Word by ‘laying up’ his truth in our heart. And thereby turning-away from lies and delusions (‘iniquity’) in our tabernacle (mind) and in our heart. We must put the ‘iniquity’ of lies and delusions far away from our mind and heart, and fill it with His words of truth. If we do that, then He will ‘build up’ our tabernacle. If we (re)turn to His truth, He will ‘build up’ our mind. We will be renewed in the spirit of our mind (Ephesians 4:23).
