“For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” Psalm 61:3

A strong tower … There is also a weak tower in the Bible, a tower that was not finished (Luke 14:30): the tower of Babel in Genesis 11.

A Biblical advice is to first count the costs before we decide to build a tower. Because maybe we cannot finish it.

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” Luke 14:28

And then we become an object of ridicule:

“Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him” Luke 14:29

What does building a tower refer to? A tower is a dwelling place, and just like a house, tent or tabernacle, this refers to our mind (1). Our ‘house’ does not fall if we build it on the Rock (Matthew 7:24-25). And the Rock refers to Yeshua (1 Corinthians 10:4). When we build our ‘house’ like that, we are called wise.

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24-25

In this text building and foundation is mentioned as well.

We begin to build our mind (tower) on the foundation of the Rock as we begin to fill our mind with His truth. But: let’s ensure that we can also finish this work, so that man cannot say:

“This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Luke 14:30

The unfinished tower in Luke 14 refers of course to the tower of Babel that was not finished. Why could it not be finished? The motivation was wrong!

“let us make us a name” Genesis 11:4

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower” Proverbs 18:10

In Babylon it was not about Him, about His truth. It was not about His Name. It was about ‘our’ name: lies and delusions from the mind of man. And if we ‘build’ our mind in this way, then we cannot finish it.

“This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Luke 14:30

It was not built on the foundation of the Rock. And if we do not build our mind (house) on the Rock, then the fall of our ‘house’ will be great (Matthew 7:27). Then the top of our ‘tower’ will not reach unto heaven (Genesis 11: 4). Because we only reach unto (spiritual) heaven by Him, by His truth, not by power of man (2). We are not exalted from ourselves, by the mind of man, we shall be exalted by Him when we humble ourselves. And that is by getting rid of all the lies and delusions of man.

“And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:5

And then our ‘tower’ is built that will reach unto heaven (Genesis 11: 4), on the foundation of the Rock.
